The most dangerous places? Passengers’. For some strange reason 84 out of 100 Italians believe that the rear seats are safer. Yet science says otherwise.
In the event of an accident, a passenger sitting behind without a belt (which is also mandatory) is at least twice as injured as the driver, who is able to get more warning of the danger. In case of impact at a speed of 80 km per hour, a person of 65 kg per hour is projected forward with a force of almost 30,000 Newtons, hundreds of times more than the arms could bear. The rear centre passenger, in particular, becomes in these cases a bullet in flesh, thrown out of the passenger compartment.
