how does natural selection work? In nature, mutations – permanent changes in the genetic dowry of organisms – happen randomly. But evolution, the process for which plants and animals change over the course of successive generations, does not work at random. Changes that help an organism survive and reproduce are favored and become more common. This is the simple version: in practice, however, natural selection does not work on individuals, but on the whole group. Here, a terricolous finch of the cactus (Geospiza scandens): legend has it that observing its long beak made to dig into flowers, Darwin “understands” the bases of the theory of evolution.
