This small vermiform formation – a thin “tubin,” 5 to 9 cm long – is part of the large intestine (especially of the blind portion) but does not seem to have a role in the digestion of food, because it is no longer able to absorb nutrients It could be a legacy of times when our diet was rich in leaves (herbic animals that consume a lot of cellulose often have a very elongated blind). Recent theories suggest that it serves as a reserve of “good” bacteria for the intestine.
